Got blacklisted after one campaign years ago, never went back to email. Anyone else?

Had a conversation recently with an affiliate who's been in the industry 15 years. Full time on Facebook and TikTok now.

Asked him why he never does email.

"Sent a campaign once. Domain ended up on a blacklist. Never touched it again."

That was probably 5 or 6 years ago.

A blacklist entry from one bad campaign is fixable. Most entries clear within days once the underlying problem is sorted. Delist, fix the setup, move on.

His ESP showed an error, deliverability collapsed, and he assumed email was broken. Nobody explained what actually happened.

Do you think this is common? Has anyone here avoided email long term after one bad experience?

I think this happens more often than people admit. A single bad experience can leave a lasting impression, especially if you don't understand what went wrong. I've seen people write off an entire marketing channel because of one mistake, even when the issue was something that could have been fixed. Email definitely has a learning curve, but so do Facebook ads and TikTok. If someone had explained the blacklist issue properly, he might never have abandoned it. Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't the technical problem itself, it's simply not having the right guidance when things go wrong.

This is likely more common than people think. A lot of affiliates have one bad experience with deliverability, see their campaigns stop performing, and decide email just isn't worth the hassle. In most cases, though, blacklist issues can be resolved with the right setup and list management practices. The real problem is that many people never get a clear explanation of what went wrong in the first place.
