I have been waiting on this to happen.

A WebmasterWorld thread has an SEO claiming he received a response from Google to a reconsideration request that the only way his site will be reincluded in Google is if he removes all or most of the links in those WordPress themes.

Me, too ... but I still got that knot in my neck. So much happening so fast it's getting difficult to take it all in and process it before you find another stunner in the news.
(sigh)

fitnfree, to be able to keep your sites safe, you not only have to comply, you have to plan for the future. Keep up with everything Matt Cutts says.

Matt always tells the truth, but you have to remember, he is very educated and very good with words. He almost always gives answers and warnings of things to come.

When he or Google states what is to come, start getting your site ready. He is also good about giving answers in body language. Here is a video example. Watch Matts hand at around 1 min in and you will hear his say if you over do it, we make it "hurt a bit", but his body language says it is gonna hurt a "lot". Here is the video:

One more example is rel=canonical, it has been out for a few years now, it is explained what it is for, and over the last year panda has been on the warpath with duplicate content on sites.

When they give you a solution to a problem that they may be having and offer a solution, implement it.

There is nothing that has been hit that was not warned of by Google and Co.

If you stay on top of these types of things, you will be able to see the direction they are going and most of the time you can stay way ahead of Google and the updates that obliterate peoples livelihood.

Thanks Linda,

As an example, I can pretty much tell you where Google is going at least 2 years in advance based on their current and past trends and changes. Anyone can do this based on information across the web at top SEO sites.

We know they are trying to bring in more social because of a lot of loss of high level Google employees jumping ship over the last year or two since one of the founders "Resigned" from an appointed position on the DOD and came back and completely changed direction when he stepped back in as the CEO. ( you don't hear that on SEOMOZ ), but it does have an impact.

The vision of leadership determines the track they will take in the future. Steven Jobs is a prime example of this. Bill Gates seen a computer in every house, Steve Jobs seen one in every other hand. So who seen the bigger picture? It is estimated that 12 to 15% of all searches are now from smart phones and tablets of some kind.

Google is on a heavy social kick, One of the founders was asked what he wanted Google to achieve, and he stated "The mind of God". Then they implemented machine learning and that started panda. Bounce rate, pogo sticking, short clicks, long clicks, time on page, time on site, page views gained a huge portion of the algo respective to other major signals.

You have to remember that their focus is social, and an algo can only do so much, it has a limited spectrum, so giving more weight to one aspect means another aspect loses some of the spectrum. This is why anchors were reduced in favor of more natural linking, like url links , click here and visit as anchors because most natural links are anchored with these types of links.

They seem to have modeled the time issues to be a lot better at letting the public decide what quality is based on these models.

This is why they are screaming user interaction and quality content.

Some argue that bounce rates are not that critical, but what do you do when you land on a page with spun content on it? How long does it take you to recognize it and hit the back button ( I assumed you would hit the back button ) ?

Getting up top is still not that hard with bad links, but when they land in traffic, if they have a low quality site, they are soon to go away.

Tracking over 500 sites across 50 different top level keywords, we have seen the first page change out completely on over 16% of these queries.

They mean what they say when they state they want quality, and they now have a limited ability to really put the decisions in the hands of the people who search Google. You are not going to get away with crappy sites anymore.

Sure, there are some anomalies, but for the most part, Google is getting pretty stout.

Keep up with news on Google, who goes, who comes along with information on what the company and heavy hitters in the company do. Most of all, pay attention to Matt, he warns us on everything.

Most also missed something vital in the unnatural links post Matt made over penguin:

We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling web sites. As always, we’ll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal.

(or even no search engine optimization at all)

That is where linking is heading because they will soon be able to tell natural from a self generated link.
