Apparently, ministers are to consider plans for a database of electronic information holding details of every email sent and phone call made the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said the data is a "crucial tool" for protecting national security and preventing crime.

I wonder how effective this database can be given the fact that one can route call via providers from other countries.

What do you think?

I don't think they will be able to do it!!

Will they use it to fight spam??

Plus too many legality issues in doing it.

What do you think?
That's horrible...

Also doing that would be impossible since some people use encryption for email and other data. Unless they mean they are just going to keep track of all government e-mail? But I would assume they do that already.

I don't see this holding up. It will breach EU Privacy and Human Rights law.
I thought the UK wasn't a part of the EU. So wouldn't that not matter anyways.

TEMI: They are the government, legality issue will not be a problem
This curent government has lost so many cases in the Courts because their legislation is incompatible with the "Human Rights Act"
