Totally, don't believe Matt Cutts bullshit about it not working anymore.

If you do things in a MANUAL way and not automated then you won't leave any footprint and you'll be totally fine. That includes not using "guest blogging" sites where it's obvious every link is a guest post - because if those sites get penalised (assuming it hasn't been already) it can reflect badly on your site.

For the best value do guest blogging the hard way - make contacts, network.

What do you mean? Are you planning on having someone to post a guest post article on your site or are you going to publish an article on another site as a guest post writer? In any case, it actually depends on how good the guest post content is and how relevant the topic being discussed in relation to your niche. Meaning, the more interesting the content and the more useful the topic, the better the chances of attracting more readers which in turn will be mutually beneficial to you and the other guy's site...
