How did you start your first affiliate website?

I started back before we had the GUI internet as we know today. Back then most of us were running bulletin boards and monetized them, mostly on subscriptions. Then the '90's came and everything changed. At that point we saw all of the porn bulletin boards move to the new net and monetize. That gave us early adopters loads to think about.
The second many of us saw what Frank Kern did with his first few eBooks in the mid '90's we started doing similar email marketing and then soon after site developments to support it and then many moved into the expanded MMO niche options. Most of my portfolio back then was private affiliate agreements for hosting, ring tones (big), and internet providers like DreamHost (huge back then), Prodigy, Angelfire, etc. I moved on to CPA for many years after that and then about 2011 moved into content marketing which is over 75% of my business now.

i didnt know anything about this when i started, the thing for me was finding a program that just didnt want money, but showed you how to make money the correct way and they did which was perfect for newbies, and it was a community that actually helped me i think this is the key being involved in a community then the sales will come when you know how

then Wordpress changed everythin
so i copied the concept of the most popular websites
dug into their tech stack
analyzed my site against theirs
created a task list
scheduled the tasks & relentlessy made front and back end improvements
if you goin after 1 sub niche or medium difficulty keyword range
very tough to beat this strategy
but you have to do a lot of work

I've been running our WP agency website for 8 or so years and a while ago someone suggested I start an affiliate program.
Ours ran privately for about 2 years
and we calculated the commissions manually and tracked the conversions using our own tracking scripts
6 months ago we decided it's time to take it public and we installed AffiliateWP on our website which now gives our affiliates a Dashboard
I guess that's it on our end.
