Have you used SMS marketing and Email marketing before ? Which is the best?

These are two very different platforms and do not have comparable features.

Both have benefits and both can be productive.

I do an abundance of email marketing. I generally send 12 times a month to each of my lists. My lists range from 125k to over 500k.

SMS is attached to my content sites as an opt-in option.

SMS marketing is often seen as more personal and intimate because it feels like you’re sending a text message to someone rather than an email. This can be an advantage if you want to create a sense of urgency or intimacy with your customers. However, SMS messages are also limited to 160 characters, so you need to be concise with your message.

Email marketing is less personal than SMS marketing but doesn’t have the same character limit. This means you can include more information in your emails, such as links to your website or product images. Email marketing is also less intrusive than SMS marketing, so your customers are more likely to read your emails.

So, which is the best option for your business? It depends on your goals and what you want to achieve with your marketing campaign. If you want to create a sense of urgency or intimacy with your customers, then SMS marketing might be the better option. If you want to include more information in your marketing message, then email marketing might be the better choice.

If people want, and ask for, SMS messages they are likely to read them. But I think segmentation to the viewer's relevance matters a lot.

SMS and email used as a marketing ploy becomes a nuisance fast unless it's relevant to the viewer's interests --and not you just hyping your latest offer. Do that and you will end up in the spam box and your email reputation will suffer (Gmail, Outlook, etc.).

Absolutely! It is critical IMO.

Yes, I 100% agree.

I’ve used both SMS and email marketing, and they both have their perks! SMS is super direct and usually gets quicker responses, which is great for time-sensitive promotions. I used SMS marketing for a local event once, and people were engaging almost instantly.

On the other hand, email marketing allows for more detailed content and visuals, making it perfect for newsletters and longer messages. I’ve found success with a mix of both, depending on what I'm promoting.

If you're planning to reach people while traveling, I’d recommend checking out International SIM Cards & eSIMs | Prepaid Travel eSIM for reliable SIM cards. It really helps to have a good connection for your marketing efforts while on the go!

SMS marketing for a local event

This is what it is most productive with SMS. A friend of mine put together a platform software for organizations to use for their events and it was an instant success. Fire Departments are using it a lot for their BBQ''s, clothing and food drives, and holiday donations,. Community Centers and faith based organizations are all in on this platform as well. Anything that is a local event.

It seems to me that SMS has seen its better days already because most cold SMS have been largely seen as spam, yet opt-in SMS has become a solid add-on for some businesses. I get SMS from many of the businesses I have accounts with because I opted in for them. The cold SMS I receive, I always type STOP!

SMS is great when we opt-in, and it's always unwanted when it is a cold SMS. If a business wants to contact me "cold", I prefer they do it by email.

Which is Best?

The best choice depends on your objectives:

  • For Immediate Engagement: SMS may be better for urgent notifications, flash sales, or reminders.
  • For In-Depth Communication: Email is ideal for newsletters, detailed promotions, and informative content.
In many cases, a combination of both SMS and email marketing can provide a comprehensive strategy, utilizing the strengths of each method. Testing and analyzing the results will help determine what works best for your specific audience and goals.
