Essential SEO

So, I've done some PPC and had success, but I know NOTHING about SEO. There is an overwhelming amount of information scattered all over the internet about SEO. Can anyone suggest a website, or give me a how-to list, of the essential seo strategies that every website needs to do? It seems like everyone gets into all different advanced strategies, but there's no bullet point list of "Do this first, then this, and then this".

Does anyone have a resource like that?
