COVID-19 vs Affiliate Marketing: What Works During Crisis

Steve @ Voluum

Coronavirus is shaking up businesses and consumer behavior on a massive scale.

Where is affiliate marketing in all this? Well, opinions across the industry are mixed: CoronaVirus Pandemic Products. Some don’t see many changes in their performance, some cut off their budgets completely, while others increase their ad spend hoping to get revenue beyond their previous possibilities.

For sure there are opportunities to get profits in these crazy times. BUT to actually make them work we need to understand what the hell is happening.

Where are we now?

The effects of the virus and the drastic measures undertaken to prevent it are already heavily impacting industries around the globe causing:
  • Disruption of the global supply chain
  • Shifts in eCommerce – The nearest future for eCom remains unclear.
  • Businesses around the globe to struggle - We see a negative impact on all verticals where, ultimately, money has to exchange hands.

The impact of #stayathome movement

People spend more time at home
As most people are stuck at home 24/7 they spend much more time surfing the web. Unfortunately, this doesn’t translate into the growth of organic traffic for most businesses. For news and financial spaces it's up but for the rest, traffic goes down (source).

Higher interest in work-from-home offers
Basically 24/7 hometime mixed with worries about the financial future will make people start looking for remote money-making opportunities.

What Covid-19 Means For Marketers

#1 A shift in ad performance
(more on this below)

#2 Average CPC will drop - Brands will be spending less on advertising, overall CPCs may go down dramatically, meaning we all will have way more opportunities.

#3 Profound Changes in Search Trends - Demand for household items and medical supplies are spiking to an extraordinary degree.

#4 Ad Review Delays - Because of the COVID-19 many traffic-source workers are unable to work or only work part-time. Waiting time for content & ad reviews is much longer than usual, and this may also cause delayed ad delivery.

Affiliate Marketing vs. COVID-19: Our Top 8 Profitable Niches and Verticals

The moment we realized how big the impact of COVID-19 might be on our industry, we started gathering insights from all of our partners (traffic sources, affiliate networks, super-affiliates, etc.) and communities we're a part of on what the best performing offers are in times like these to help you survive and prosper.

Based on this data, we've created a top 8 profitable niches and verticals to get into right now.

We've also prepared a list of marketing tips (available here).

Be safe.

If possible, stay home.

And most importantly – don't give up - we're all in this together and the situation is still very dynamic.

The general advice coming from this thread is one:

We're all at home now - let's not waste our time, instead make good use of it.

Affiliates are blessed in many respects in that
  1. they can work from home (so lockdown isn't affecting their work mode),
  2. they can easily switch from one vertical or offer to another (times are changing and so are people's needs),
  3. and they have skills that will always be in demand (affiliate marketing isn't going nowhere).
Consider starting affiliate marketing today even more than you did yesterday.

Don't know how to start? We'll show you.

i have seen an increase in Native programs to do with
1. Antiviral supplements
2. Health products-How to boost your immunity
3. UV light antiviral gadgets
4. increase wifi speed when you are working from home
5. How to make money at home

There's also a boom in the audio conferencing Softwares, video conferencing, remote desktop, Softwares, etc.
Here's an article on G2's Software Marketplace Survey:
The COVID-19 Crisis Is Transforming the Way We Use Software

Well me i think people tend to keep money these days and not to spend so much buying online as they are afraid of jobs economy etc .But we as online marketars we have an advantage with isolation . We have a lot of time and we kill our time ,we can work hard ,learn new things etc .Compared to other people who dont have a clue about IM they spend time on social media ,watching movie etc .I dont say IM-ers are superior to normal people but we have a chance to spend our time with value

yes situation is crazy , but to stay home means we cant be weak and worry and stress , we have to do things also , so i hope all online work will be great and we will have amazing result. lest earn and never stop to earn.

Hello Karolina,
I am affiliate manager from Cloudways (managed cloud hosting platform). Digital products are best for now. Just to share hosting industry experience, let me add multiple cases with you:
- Now more offline businesses realize that they need a domain, hosting and all important stuff to run their business.
- Agencies are canceling premiums/ add-on services and they are switching from expensive hosting providers to alternates.
- Trainers are massively in right now. Whether it is a course around "how to create Wordpress website" or "launch affiliate website", hosting is crucial part of their courses.
- Agencies and Freelance developers are now more in this, they recommend managed cloud hosting to clients, this help them focus on clients requirements rather than getting involved in server level technicalities.

best....

I hope you're staying safe and on top of your game in these difficult times.

As the advertising world seems to be changing every day, I was wondering what we, as Voluum, can do to help. We talked to some of our partners to stay in the loop on what it looks like from their perspective, what works and what doesn't, and I want to share with you some insights we got.

Today, I'll post a list of best performing offers of recent weeks from ClickBank, Zeydoo, Mobipium, Mobidea, CrakRevenue, PWN Games and ClickDealer. You can directly test them or use as examples to see what other test.

I told a friend earlier to use this time of duress to build your business with empathy and maybe some free offer. Goodwill earned during a time of crisis is remembered by customers.

Trying to make money in a very depressed market will not succeed in most cases.

You rock Karolina! :) and... if you guys are into native ads, let me chip in here and share with you more insights - but from the perspective of Voluum DSP - covering the performance from March and April to date.

As COVID-19 is shaking up affiliate marketing and consumer behavior, we’ve summed up for you the global affiliate marketing activity and trends:
- Lead Gen - a slight downward trend - both in SOI and DOI - yet remember you still can be profitable if you carefully match the right country with the right offers
- Streaming - boosting - as people stay at home they tend to add new streaming subscriptions to their devices
- COD - decreasing - these days consumers want to stay away from paying upon delivery
- Arbitrage - growing - here it’s all about finding the right traffic source, but generally there’s much more traffic available to buy for arbitrage and it's cheap
- SS catching up with the trial offers - within ecom, affiliates are now more happy to work with SS than trials, especially in GEOs where delivery is still available

Go ahead and make some good use of the latest Voluum DSP performance insights on native ads! The pattern is as follows:

VoluumDSP Top Ad Ex - eCPM per Ad Ex - winning verticals - recommended GEOs:
Mobfox - eCPM: $2.9 - streaming, nutrition - RU, US, DE, GCC
MoPub - eCPM: $1.46 - streaming, app utilities - RU, US, ZA, Europe (redirectless setup needed)
Smaato
- eCPM: $3.08 - app utilities, streaming, nutrition, ecom, trading - RU, US, GCC
MGID - eCPM: $0.89 - male enhancement, nutrition, dating, ecom, trading - US, MX & LATAM, IT
Outbrain - eCPM: $0.90 - business, ecom - Europe, US
RevContent - eCPM: $0.59 - skin care, trading, ecom, gambling (where legal), surveys - US, UK, CA, MX
Admixer - eCPM: $0.49 - trading, gaming - RU, DE
Nativo - eCPM: $1.84 - nutrition, ecom, dating - US, UK

Note:
*these are global average rates based on wins. CPMs may be different for your GEO and vertical. Always feel free to reach out to us for more info
*some GEOs are available upon request and thus not visible in the Planning Tool. Check with your DSP AM if there’s more traffic available in your countries.

Aloha and be safe!
Justyna
