How has the gambling vertical changed over 2021? What to expect in 2022? Interview with Anton Voistrikov

Hey everyone, today we’re talking about iGaming, to be more precise — how this vertical has changed over the course of the previous year. Despite the growing number of players, it wasn’t as easy for affiliates as the previous ones. There are many reasons for this: traffic sources made moderation more strict, payment systems don’t always work properly and the competition is fierce.

We decided to ask Anton Voistrikov, Founder & CEO of the CLICKLEAD affiliate network, how approaches have changed over the past year, and what 2021 was like for his affiliate network.

Did a new traffic driving approach appear?

Overall — sticking to the classic approaches, just like we’ve been recommending over the past few years. If we’re talking about apps — then follow the example of social casinos, show people winning and having a good time. That way you’ll get a more targeted audience for your product, and with it - better CPA rates.As for creatives, approaches that utilize the bonus wheel work great, both when it’s in the creative and on the pre-landing, where instead of a prize the person gets a deposit bonus. This format performs well and makes players spend more on average. As for traffic-driving - more and more affiliates turn to verified BMs and quality rentable accounts.

How did affiliates fare during the Facebook crisis?
Affiliates split into 3 camps: the first - who kept driving traffic through Facebook despite the bans. The second - who moved to alternative sources: Google, TikTok. The third group quit affiliate marketing altogether and ventured off into other lines of work. As for us, it didn’t really affect us all that much, we just temporarily adopted a new approach and traffic-driving methods. Despite many difficulties in 2021, according to our data, our buying grew by about 30% on Facebook compared to last year.

Are there a lot of lone wolf affiliates currently or do they all tend to team up nowadays?
The best results and volumes here are all secured by teams. We haven't met any major solo-buyers yet. After all, you spend a lot of time searching, buying, establishing and passing tests and checks. The best way to scale such bundles is when you have a team. What GEOs and offers did you discover this year?

These offers were the most popular. But besides that, our top GEOs for 2021 were Germany, Canada, France and Italy. The company primarily focuses on solvent GEOs with high-quality traffic and large CPA payouts.

What do you guys currently have in the works?
We’re planning on releasing new brands for Tier 1 and Tier 2 countries. Recently, our team has been actively developing the most profitable GEOs affiliate marketing-wise, we’re trying to maximize the profits of our webmasters.

We plan to further our advancement in areas where we already hold a firm position - Germany, Canada, France and Italy.

What promising traffic sources are currently out there?
PPC (Google AdWords) has been performing well, but the company’s flagship source is still Facebook and mobile apps. We’re currently working through dozens of apps simultaneously.

*P.S. At the time this interview was published, CLICKLEAD was actively using 8 iOS and 18 Android apps.
Popular and local in-app networks have also been performing noticeably well.

How did CLICKLEAD adapt to this?
We started developing more apps. Specifically - apps with a big set of analytical tools in them, that help affiliates analyze what exactly the traffic is doing in the app and how it's doing it. This approach makes selecting the right offer easier.
Moreover, we’ve stepped up our efforts to make players come back to the apps, we can safely claim that our push notifications system with its audience segmentation and autofunnels is one of the best on the market. According to our estimates, push notifications are “responsible” for up to 50% of all subsequent deposits, with traffic bringing in income so far as 6 months after initially being driven to the offer.

What technical solutions are currently popular among affiliates?
Apart from our own apps, I’d have to say the Creative Uniquelizer. It pumps out over 1,000 creatives every day. It’s mostly used by our own webmasters. But many users drive traffic to other verticals and also actively use our service, we don’t mind at all and are happy to help the market.

As for important bumps, besides the Facebook storm, we experienced trouble with sharing in 2021, we quickly adapted and were one of the first to pump out a solution to the problem, and currently we’re improving the technology and connection speed of our apps and Facebook ad accounts. We dealt with the 99 account limit problem in 2021 pretty quickly thanks to well-oiled teamwork. During the storm the guys adapted to the new conditions well and neutralized the problem

Our plans for the near future include upgrading our bots and automating lots of different actions. Very soon we will start collecting feedback on how to improve the technical aspect of CLICKLEAD. So stay tuned for our news to not miss any important developments.

What changes did the year bring in terms of app development?
We’ve come up with ways to use a large volume of previously made deposits to “train” all our new apps. As for their number, in the last quarter we’ve steadily had 20+ apps actively working simultaneously. The goal for 2022 is to reach 50+ active apps a day. We’ve also hired a manager for our retention and testing sections, in the new year our apps will be even more productive.
Our best app indicator in 2021 was $1 million worth of revenue off of 1 app.

How did ASO change?

We analyze and improve our apps. In 2021 our internal buying started participating in designing ASO apps. They currently have a steady and high conversion rate and are made by affiliates for affiliates.

Android or IOS, which apps last longer?

After patch 14.5, iOS traffic started to noticeably sag, but we currently have 6-8 iOS apps with the development section releasing new ones. You can still drive traffic and webmasters do, but the focus has seriously shifted towards Android apps.

Which 2021 meetup was the most memorable?

After the previous completely “online” year, the large-scale conferences of 2021 were a breath of fresh air. Most of all we enjoyed the meetups of Denis Lagutenko’s team - KINZA. Both the Moscow and Kiev conferences were on par. iGB Live Amsterdam was also one to remember.

What conferences do you plan to attend in 2022?

We got big plans for 2022, they include both CIS region conferences and international ones - Dubai, London, Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg, etc. We love to chat with our partners offline at conferences. We also plan to hold at least one own meetup, where we will present the main prize of our competition - a McLaren 765LT.

How did the idea to launch a contest with a prize fund of more than $1 million come about?

I’ve worked in this industry for over 10 years and in that time I saw a lot of contests. They all had prizes of various sizes, but what struck me was that in addition to the main winners there were a lot of top-tier participants who were left with nothing.

Android or iOS: which apps should an affiliate start with

Using apps in affiliate marketing became relevant since it's easier to pass
moderation that way + the increasing number of mobile users. This traffic
is of higher quality, no need to make pre-landings, search for white-hat
banners and use cloaking + apps optimize well and inspire more trust.

All these advantages are the reason more and more webmasters
are starting to drive traffic through apps !

If we compare the stats, we'll see that the share of Desktop users is
decreasing in the face of a growing number of mobile device owners. In
2020 alone, the number of people that access the Internet from their
phones has grown by 4.6%.

Features of Android and iOS

People who use smartphones that run Android are usually less solvent

Static or Dynamic iGaming Creatives: What converts better in 2022

Some webmasters think that static creatives are becoming a thing of the past — leads
just don’t get hooked on such ads and their conversion rate is significantly
lower. Additionally 2022 has been declared the year of video ads. So how much of this
is true and should you really throw static ads under the bus? Let’s get to the bottom of it.

What sort of creative should I use to promote iGaming offers?

“Static or dynamic creatives?” — some webmasters are faced with this question while
compiling the ToR for their designer.
First of all, you need to assess the GEO you’re planning to work with. If the country has a
weak Internet connection, best to go for static creatives. Animations may end up being
too heavy to load and will only serve to annoy users.

If however, you work with countries with a stable Internet connection and populated by
lovers of video content - dynamic creatives are the obvious choice.
