Why are Networks using WHOIS protection?

Just a quick little question,

Why are reputable networks such as AdscendMedia, and DMSAffiliates, etc using whois protection on their domains? If they are reputable, I do not see why they cannot register their information on it. I get why it's done, but it is just a small bit sketchy if you ask me.

Privacy factors and avoiding whois spam?
I coded a scrape bot that looks up whois for domains on a random timer and I can scrape quite a few look ups in a bash script <rather trivial ... Sort of useless these days though.

This may be the case, but if you are a company and or have an office, I do not see the need for it?
