Email marketing is surely a good traffic source but it requires a lot of work, you need an email list specific to a niche that you can send your offers too. Building a list is the most important part.
It's not like you shell out a little money, get a huge list, spam those with your emails, and make tonnes of money. It's easier said than done. It requires more work than you'd think

Build up a double opt in list but offering something of value that potential users want. (Prize draws, ebooks, how to guides, competitor information etc). Then, as has been mentioned, use this channel to slowly build up a user base. Don't hit people too hard otherwise they will just junk you. Email is definitely a useful channel but it can take time to build. Good luck.
