What is SVG?

Short for Scalable Vector Graphics, a vector graphics file format that enables two-dimensional images to be displayed in XML pages on the Web. Vector images are created through text-based commands formatted to comply with XML specifications. In contrast to JPEG and GIF images on the Web, which are bitmapped and always remain a specified size, SVG images are scalable to the size of the viewing window and will adjust in size and resolution according to the window in which it is displayed.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. The SVG specification is an open standard developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) since 1999. SVG images and their behaviors are defined in XML text files.

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, are not new to website design. These powerful graphics have just been very much under utilized until recently. This format of image construction uses xml to describe two-dimensional vector graphics. Until IE9, Internet Explorer did not support SVG without an additional plug-in. That greatly stunted the growth of this vital XML-based file format, but that all changed with ie9 and with other modern Web browsers like Chrome which support this image file format.

SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. SVG is used to define graphics for the Web. SVG is a W3C recommendation.
