I think e-book covers are a very good way to go. It gives a positive cosmetic look to your product.
Even though it's only virtual, I think it adds a lot to your customer's experience. Anything that helps you get your most wanted response, the click, is gold, IMO.
I think a good cover does help as well. Can also help on your sales page with sales and conversions. A while back I read a post where a marketer linked the ebook cover with the order link on his sales page and actually saw an increase in conversions.
