A friend of mine is using Boostability and Netmark to do SEO for his website and he is paying them $300 a month each. Will these companies really produce results? What exactly are they doing for him?

i would like to suggest you that whatever the SEO company doing to promote your friends website. Just tell them to monitor the result. Check your Google analyticat tool, webmaster tool. It is important that it should generate return for your website.

For that money your friend can bu some cool links himself , I don't see any reason to give money others .
They do the same think that can easily do your friend himself . They just do on-page SEO and then buy link to his website .
