Open Source Video Editing Software ~ recommendations?

Can anyone recommend an good open source video editing software package?

Just something simple to allow me to manipulate MPEG files and the like.

Freeware is not always good ware, and vise versa. I often find problems in freeware. How about this one - htt p://ww w.freedownloadscenter.com/Search/mpeg_editor.html
 
Personally I like VirtualDub. Great free tool for editing avi files. You can always convert to and from MPEGs with some free conversion tool.

Functionality is a little limited though. Windows Movie Maker comes free with XP (and Vista I think) and again, you will need to convert to and from the file format it uses.

If you want any more advanced functionality than that then I guess you will have to splurge on some tasty video editing software.

I use Sony Vegas Pro myself, they have a cheap version which goes for around $100, you can try that, they also give you a fully functional trial as far as i know.

Open source doesn't really compete as of yet, at least i haven't heard of anything. Which is to bad, because video editing is very over priced.
