Website Review Rules and Guidelines

For the person requesting the review

Please read these rules and guidelines before creating a thread, failure to follow these rules will result in your review request being deleted :

  1. You must have at least 10 posts before requesting a review.
  2. Each thread must contain request for review for only one site.
  3. Use the following format for thread title - Review:Sitename.
  4. Provide a live link to your website in your post. Your post should contain only one link to your website.
  5. Only submit a site for review if the development work on the site has been completed or is almost complete. Specify if the development work on site has been fully completed or not. If it has been completed, also specify for how long this site has been up.
  6. You can only submit your own site for review or if you are responsible for some aspect of that site (for example if you're a webmaster, developer, designer, SEO of that site)
  7. If the site requires users to log in, then provide demo log in details. Reviewers shouldn't have to register to review your site.
  8. Provide following information about your site as well :
    • what is the purpose of the site.
    • Specify what target audience you have in your mind for your site
    • Tell us how many backlinks your site has.
    • What keywords you are targeting.
    • How is your site any different than other similar sites already online.
    • do you want feedback on your code errors and any improvements you can make.
    • specify how important usability and accessibility is to you.
    • do you want any design suggestions.
Also, provide any other relevant information which you think could be useful for the reviewer.
  9. If you don't want reviewers to give input on any particular aspect of your website, then say so in your post.
  10. Be prepared to hear criticism about your site, don't feel disappointed. Since website reviews are mainly a mechanism to help you improve your website, it makes sense that reviewers will focus on your site's shortcomings.

For the reviewers

  1. If the user requesting the review has asked reviewers to review a particular aspect of their site, then refrain from making comments on other aspect of their site. Similarly, if the user has requested reviewers not to give any input regarding any particular aspect of their site, then please comply with the request.
  2. Don't be afraid criticize, but try to give constructive criticism. For example, don't just say that "i don't like your site's design" provide reasons why you don't like the site design, what can be done to improve the site design in your opinion.
  3. When posting about a layout bug, give as much information about your system as possible. Answer at least following questions in you post :
    • which operating system you're using?
    • which browser you are using?
    • what is your screen resolution?
    • is your browser window fully maximized?
    • did you changed any default settings which can affect site layout?
providing a screen shot will be quite helpful as well.
  4. When posting about a website code bug provide detailed information including any input which you used uncover the buggy behavior.
  5. You don't have to be an experienced web developer or web designer to review a site, try giving review from an end user's perspective. Some of the questions you can try asking yourself and answering when reviewing a new site :
    • is it clear what the site does when you visit the site's homepage or do you have to
search around to find out what the site is actually for?
    • is the site navigation logical? can you easily move around or do you feel lost?
    • are colors appropriate for the target audience?
    • is the site loading slowly compared to other site?

this should now get some real feedback for site owners. The beauty about this is that many of our members are specialists, Coding for example is not my strong point, so rarely would I review for coding errors. people like Smea & bagi though are always on the ball in that department. I think the trick is that if you are a designer, comment on the design, if copy is your strength, comment on that, coding, comment on that .

What then happens is the site owner get a really good pictue, and others who then read it can learn from the review and put it into use on their own sites.

I honestly like the rules, it will improve the length and the quality of the feedbacks.

I would say that anyone thinking of asking for a review should NOT be put off. Honestly if you take a little time then you WILL GAIN MORE from the review.

for example, I copied and pasted the questions in:~
what is the purpose of the site.
The purpose is to rbing in more enquiries for my services

Specify what target audience you have in your mind for your site
Small business owners locally within travelling distance

Tell us how many backlinks your site has.
Don't know what you mean sorry.

What keywords you are targeting.
I am targeting xxx, xxx, & xxx for the UK

How is your site any different than other similar sites already online.
I have unique content that I have written myself

do you want feedback on your code errors and any improvements you can make.
No thanks, I am a good coder, and am happy with the code UNLESS it could hurt me in the search engines..

specify how important usability and accessibility is to you.
VERY important

do you want any design suggestions.
Yes Please design is not my strongpoint.
----------------------------------------------------

Don't be afraid to say "i don't have a clue what you mean", I am a very good SEO/Web Marketer, and I say this all the time when it comes to code etc. Don't lose money because you want to keep face. If you admit you 'know nothing' then the reply will be worded in a way you can understand :)

So cmon who is going to be first?
