I'm also fascinated by the concept of Gamification - in essence the marketing aim is to capture and maintain the user's attention, and move them towards a final objective using game-like mechanics. We hear about it increasingly on mobile because everyone is attempting to master user-engagement on a smaller screen, but there are numerous apps already doing a great job of it.
While apps such as Nike+ get all the fame, I have to say my favourite example is Duolingo, a language-learning app that gives you all the right incentives to continue practising and is as addictive as any actual game. We are in the process of creating an app at IconPeak that hopes to capitalize on some of these gaming mechanisms as well, so I'll keep you posted
