How to tell a good story in an email sequence having not already made any sales

I've been hearing the soap opera sequence, where you tell a story about how you get to where you are, and how the product made you successful and changed your life (what if it currently hasn't?).

Does this make it impossible to make the first sale selling a MMO product?

I am told to state how I recovered from the low point, what if I haven't recovered from it?

that is like the episodes of your story 'bait' ...

• A progression to some goal
  --maybe it might take a number of 'episodes'
  (as in: emails).
• Or, some percentage goal; like in gamification;
  applied game theory: as in advance to the next level with some action by the user/visitor.
