Duplicate Content: It's Not What You Think!

Hello everyone,

I have been seeing in a lot of threads the misunderstanding of duplicate content. I am writing this to eliminate the misunderstanding so that fear of something does not effect your online marketing.

I guess the first thing is to cover the assumptions of the masses of what it is, and then show you the reality of it.

I will give you actual numbers and links so that you can check it out yourself. Then you can see for yourself with proof that there are a lot of people out there spreading ?Rumors? instead of facts.

Let?s get started. Most people think that syndicated articles or distribution to multiple places will get the articles removed from the index of Google or Yahoo. If this were true then 99% of articles, news releases, all RSS feeds would be removed from the indexes.

MSN, CNN, ABC, NBC, Google News, Yahoo News would all be violating their own rules.

They use the same news stories and syndicate the news from the contributing reporter/author, And if they are breaking the rules, do you think the algo?s of the search engines would catch 40 k occurrences of the same story? I am sure it would, and if these sites keep breaking the rules they would get penalized. In fact, they would have long been removed from the indexes.

Article directories use the same methods, they post ?Duplicate? articles to their directories from the same authors. And you can find hundreds of the same ?duplicate articles? indexed in the search engines at any time.

Here is a test for you, and I will not show you one of my articles so that I can not be accused of manipulating the results. Go to Free Articles and pick an article, any article (in fact do it on several articles) and copy the title of the article.

Then put that title in quotes like this ?Your Cold Could Be Something More? and paste it in Google and/or Yahoo In Yahoo, here is the search link with the results: “Your Cold Could Be Something More” - Yahoo! Search Results

Take a look. It is showing 1,400 times in Yahoo. Let?s check Google. Here is the search link for Google: ?Your Cold Could Be Something More? - Google Search and it is showing over 400 times in Google.

Now this article was released in 2005. Here is the publish date: Oct 22nd 2005. Now, If the search engines have had 23 months to filter out ?duplicate content? I am sure that at least Google or Yahoo would have removed them from their indexes by now. But they have not.

This is just one article. Do several yourself to see. There are millions of articles out there published on multiple directories and the directories are ok, they have not been punished and they are repeat offenders also by the public standards of Duplicate Content.

Now we will go over what ?duplicate Content? is and why it is in place.

Duplicate content is when you have an exact copy of a site. Page for page, file name for file name, image for image, code for code. And exact replica of a page or site. This was put in place for dynamic page spawners, duplicate websites, and doorway pages that were designed by blackhat seo?s and spammers that are trying to control the natural search results.

Again, I have tested this also. Take an exact copy of a site and try to push up an identical site into the top of the search engines with links. One will be removed from the index, not just one page, but the entire site. And yes, I have done this test 6 times with the same results every time.

Each article directory, Press release site and even the pages that host RSS feeds have different code, images, file names, java scrips and a multitude of other differences that stops them from getting hit by duplicate content.

There is more on a page than your article when a directory publishes your article. Search engines read all of the code, not just your articles text on the page. You do not have to worry about duplicate content with articles or press releases.

Hope this clears some things up! And remember, Hope is not a method? Nor is it a strategy. Study, test and stop buying all of the lies on the net. It is mostly common sense.

Jim

I do have the content which is same on the site and on the blog. These two sites are of the same domain. The blog is a subdomain.

Will this case be a duplicate content one?

no, it will not. one is a blog and one a site, two different page designs, this makes them different.

Your good.

Cool, thanks for asking and answering. I usually post my blog entries here too and have worried about it a little, but not enough to take the time to re-write each article. Whew!

Thanx a lot. I was worried a lot. As recently I'd lost SERP in GOOGLE, I feared a lot and thought i should re-write now. So...no rewriting..i'll leave it aside and concentrate on other work.

I hope you spell checked it. I did not go over it for proper grammar. Lol.

Thanks,Jim

Jim

This is my first post. And my first day in this community, if that is the sort of quality info that is available here then I will be around for a while. the duplicate content issue has been baffling me for a while and nobody has really convinced me of what they where saying is true until you. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

Thanks, I owe you one, now I can sleep at night again. :)

Welcome to 5 Star, Joecool.

I guess you will be around for a while because you will find plenty of quality information here.

Thanks for the great information. I've browsed this forum before but reading that just made me join because I don't want to miss out on valuable tidbits like that.

Thanks again Linda, Cherryie and joecool. We are glad to have you here with us.

There are quite a few experts here that can help. I just hope the information is usefull and then applied.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, I've submitted an article on Corporate Gifts and submitted this article to an article directory. The next day the article directory admin emailed me saying that the exact article was submitted somewhere else. Is this a case of duplicate content? If yes, what can I do to explain to the article directory since the article submitted somewhere else wasn't my work.

I think this is not a duplicate content. If you post the same content on site and blog, it is a great help for a site to get more traffic and to easily rank the keywords.

I do have the content which is same on the site and on the blog. These two sites are of the same domain. The blog is a subdomain.

Will this case be a duplicate content one?

affearner,

Some article directories will not accept them, but 99 out of 100 will, It is not that they are worried about dup content, they just want exclusive articles. Their loss.

The only other thing may be that you bought an article and it may have been published by another author earlier.

You have to write the articles if this is the case, no PLR articles. But the ones you write or have a ghost writer write for you can be submitted to hundreds of directories, and the vast majority will accept them.

Just remember a few points to get articles approved.

1. Title in title case, Here is a proper title: Everything About Writing Articles

Notice the first letter of each word is upper case?

2. Short Paragraphs. Article directories prefer short paragraphs to long ones, makes for easy reading.

3. Make the article at least 400 words. Some will accept 350 but more and more are going to 400 words or more.

Some people say 700 words is the best, but i have had equal results with 400 to 1,300 words. I think this is just preference more than anything.

These simple rules will make your articles a success as far as acceptance.

It is not that they are worried about dup content, they just want exclusive articles. Their loss.

What do you mean by it's their loss?

Lately, my account where I was suspended due to dup content was reinstated. I gave them the list of article directories included in my task list. Plus the article from somewhere carries the name of a different author.

I want to know if it's possible that the article is submitted to another directory without my knowlegde minus a human person who might have actually done it?

Well, Lets take this as an example. The following is from one my my clients many blogs. Take this an paste it in a search engine <br>
<br>material that is contaminated with mold, peeling or stripping

His blog should be # 1 on google for this, And i know, no one will search for this, but it is an example.

But id you look at the results closely, you will see almost the entire phrase in bold in the description. This is why i do not use the meta description tag also, but back to the example. Once your site is ranking top 10 for your main targeted phrase you will soon get content default phrases. And if you have a good stats program and see the search phrases you actualy get, you may be suprised by how many fluke search results you get.

Now, Do not take this out of context, but this is where they coined the phrase "Content is king" from.

Now links are the # 1 factor for attaining high rankings, but combined with lot's of content magnifies the results.

So every time they turn down an article, they are3 turning down content and possible default searches. And this equals traffic and potential revenue.

Article directories make money by traffic and ads! And 1 article could bring hundreds of results a month. So, their loss!

The internet is a numbers game, keep playing the numbers and you will win. If they turned down a good article, they lose! There are hundreds of others that will take the traffic!

Understand?

Now, Did you use a plr article, or did you write it yourself or hire a ghost writer?, or, are you using different author names at each directory???

Always use the same author name across the board per site(s) or subject.

Finance articles should be one author reguardless of the site you link to in the bio. And real estate articles should have a different author name. Keep them organized.
