Designer goods

I just read at BBC online that despite the so called credit squeeze, sales on the high street this year will exceed sales of last year as bargain hunters hit the high street to stock up on discounted designer goods.

I know some of the so called designer goods are excellent quality but I still do not understand people obsession with buy stuff because it has a certain label on it.

I'm I just weird of is the part of the society that is hell bent on goods caring a certain label who lost the plot?
