Personally I think there are 3 main reasons why you use ALT on your images.
1. To let the search engines know what the graphic is about. Crawlers cant see the image only the code. So they need you to let them know what the graphic is about.
2. For SEO reasons. Your graphic will be indexed according to the information you provide.
and
3. For traffic back to your site. I have several graphics on my test website ( coffeenwine.com ) that are ranked #1 on the search engines. So i get traffic to my site from this graphics.
