What's with Google maps appearing at the top of organic search?

Google Local absolutely worth it?

This article illustrates the start of the inevitable. When the spammers wake up from their WordPress slumbers and find these holes in the Google Map listings (I am assuming it's first come first served so that if there are 10 there already you're wasting your time), expect the maps to be full of spam.

If true that it's just the first 10 registered, it really then depends on whether genuine companies register ahead of the spammers. Whilst Google may think the maps are a sterling idea there is an inherent problem: the address is not verified, which leaves a huge hole ready to be filled at the #1 spot for localised keywords.

Because of this, I still maintain this is very bad for organic search when you consider the years of effort Google has put in to protect the authenticity of its search model.
