What is SEO & Backlinks?

I have tried finding the really basic stuff, but I can't find any. I am aware that S.E.O. is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. I can get a basic understanding from the name, but how does it effect me, and what should I do to use it?

The same goes for backlinks, what are they, and how does it effect me?

Sorry about the elementary questions, but I am totally lost here.

"SEO" means "Search Engine Optimization", the process of increasing the visibility of your site in search engines for specific search terms.

"On-page SEO" basically refers to ways of making your site search-engine-friendly and highlighting the major search terms you want to rank for.

"Off-page SEO" is everything else, acquiring links from other websites pointing to your site ("backlinks") and trying to include search terms in the anchor text for those backlinks.

I have spent the a few hours this weekend searching out SEO and learned alot. I am not yet sure how to develop 'backlinks'........but I will get there!

Scott, once you understand the basics of what backlinks are, or even if you don't, I have a free report you can download that will help point you in the right direction of where and how to go about getting backlinks from every effective source there is.
