What are your thoughts on free trial offers?

I've seen free trial offers where the merchant won't pay the affiliate unless the person who signed up for the free trial converts into a paying customer after the free trial ends.

I've also seen free trial offers where the merchant will pay the affiliate for each free trial sign up, regardless of whether the customer becomes a paying customer.

Which do you prefer and why?

Bottom line, they will stop if enough of your signups do not convert to paying customers.
Maybe, 1 in 10 free signups, maybe more; depending what the profit margins are.

A free trial is an excellent sales strategy that can lower your cost of new-customer acquisition. But free trials can also be beneficial for the sale of hard goods, including things like mattresses, tools and vehicles.
