What are you traffic targeting secrets?

Hello guys!
How do you target your traffic for a better ROI? Do you have any special secrects to get the best audience for the offer?

First Cut—sources:
  • site# 19238: You can't really target obfuscated sources like most DSP traffic is.
  • Domain placements: You can look at the domain and see if its content is related somehow to your offer.
  • Social Media ads: Here they are using some affinity attribute to sort out cohort segments to advertise to. Whether that data is really valid can be debatable.
The secret is acquiring list of buyers (your owned lists) that is not a cheap process in CPA or for that matter, in any enterprise.

I think, a lot of people focus too much on finding a magic traffic source, but the real advantage comes from having your own data and knowing who actually converts. I usually look less at big targeting options and more at small signals: placement quality, user behavior, conversion patterns, and what happens after the click. The best audiences are often built from testing and collecting data, not just picking interests or categories.

Agree that owned lists are the real long-term secret. On the paid side, matching creative/angle to actual search intent (what someone typed or clicked to get there) tends to outperform broad demographic/affinity targeting, since affinity data quality varies a lot between platforms.

From what we've seen working with advertisers across different verticals, ROI usually improves when you stop thinking about traffic as one big audience and start identifying the segments that actually convert.

Some of the biggest improvements tend to come from:
  • Testing different traffic types instead of assuming one format fits every offer.
  • Breaking campaigns down by GEO, device, OS, and other variables to find profitable pockets (or "Hot Combos" as we call them).
  • Building whitelists over time rather than relying on broad targeting indefinitely.
  • Looking beyond CTR—engagement and conversion quality are much better indicators of long-term performance.
There isn't really a secret trick. We've seen the advertisers who consistently achieve the best ROI are usually the ones who test methodically, analyze the data, and continuously refine their targeting instead of expecting profitability from day one. Patience and optimization almost always outperform trying to find a "magic" audience.

No magic secrets—just data granularity and ruthless optimization:
  1. Use pre-landers: They filter out bots and low-intent clickers before they hit your affiliate link, which protects your conversion rate with the network.
  2. Target at the micro-level: Stop running broad country-level ads. Break campaigns down by specific OS, browser, and ISP/carrier from day one.
  3. Kill losers fast: Cut underperforming widgets, placements, or sub-IDs the second they spend 1.5x the offer payout without converting. Let the data tell you who the right audience is.

one thing i've learned over time is that targeting usually matters less than the feedback you're giving the platform. a lot of buyers spend weeks refining audiences while optimizing toward a signal that doesn't actually represent revenue. once you start feeding back qualified actions instead of just clicks or registrations, the algorithm often finds pockets of traffic you wouldn't have targeted manually. sometimes the biggest improvement isn't a better audience—it's a better optimization event.
