Web hosting suggestions

LINUX unless you have some special application needs that require a Windows platform.

I have had good luck with unmanaged Ubuntu LTS distributions but they need to be rebuilt ever few years as updating has become an issue.

I built a new server last week
Operating System: Ubuntu 23.04
Kernel: Linux 6.2.0-39-generic

I’ve been messing around with different options lately, and if you're on macOS and need something flexible, go for a vps for mac. It lets you install whatever you need and the performance is way smoother than basic shared hosting. Helped me a lot when I needed full control without spending a fortune.
Tried that one and it finally meets my expectations!

Use Linux hosting. Windows hosting is usually only needed if you're using technologies that are specific to Windows, which isn't common.

Use Windows hosting only if you need ASP.NET, MS SQL Server, .NET Core on Windows, or specific Microsoft-only technologies.

Linux = more common, cheaper, stable, best for most web apps
Windows = needed only for Microsoft-specific tech

It depends what you build. Sometimes, you can even use a free services, as Cloudflare workers, and even get a better results than hosting on some VPS or shared hosting.

For most projects, especially affiliate sites, Linux is the practical default. It’s cheaper, stable, and works well with the common stacks people actually use. The more important decision is often not Windows vs Linux, but shared hosting vs VPS and how easy it will be to scale later. Even a basic Linux VPS usually gives you better performance and control once the site starts getting traffic. Windows only really makes sense if you already know you need Microsoft-specific technologies.
