Sudden SPAM attack on one wordpress site

I use askimet plug in on all my WP sites, and I've never had much of a spam problem on any of them. However, about 2 weeks ago, I suddenly started getting spam comments on one site - about 10 per day. Most of them have IP's that are from India.

The plug in and WP are up to date. Any suggestions? It's not a critical thing, as all comments are moderated, but it sure is annoying to have to keep dealing with this.

You can ban blocks of IP addresses but that's as much a pain as deleting the unapproved comments. Make sure you "delete them as spam" so that the IPs are reported to the antispam databases.

These waves aren't unusual and it will probably die down in time.

Do you have all your WP settings maxed out too to not allow comments with links and have you added a complete list of bad words, etc?

Thing is once your blog gets popular enough or ranks high enough the spammers will hit it. So congrats, your blog has arrived! :p

I get so much spam I just largely ignore comments. Prob with that is sometimes I miss ones that are legit.

I hadn't thought of that, Linda. And your suggestion made me take a closer look at my plugin options - which showed that the askimet plug in had been changed to deactivated! Maybe that happened in the last WP update I did - who knows. But that should explain the sudden spam attacks.

Now, if I can only wash my brain with soap to get rid of the memories of those sites that were posting "comments." You know, the stop foreclosure, learn to be a nurse online, and porn sites. . .
