Shortening url's in subdomains.

Question for those of you who know phpnuke.

How do I shorten a subdomain url to only show the sites main url instead of the entire subdomain?

ex: http://www.hobby-universe.lifesupporters.net/ should read hobby-universe.com

Also, will changing to a shortened url mess up the account validation links for new members?

Thanks,

Ken

I think the new webhost is using linux, I'll have to check when I get home tonight to make sure though.

Ya it's just you.

I don't have the option when installing a Content Management System as a subdomain, it makes the 00ber long url whether you want it or not. I could always install the sites as stand alones instead of subdomains but then that seems to affect the way the linked sites come up in the searches.

For example, if I type in Lifesupporters on google or what have you, I also get links to kidzone and hobby-universe but not fragtard. Fragtard is the only site right now that is not installed as a subdomain which is why I think it doesn't come up when indirectly searched for.

Of course, I could be wrong and prolly am.

Lastly, many webhosts offer unlimited subdomain accounts but have a set number of domain accounts you can use. I'd like to use up my subdomains as much as possible for this reason.

Well I'm interested to see your response.

Sorry mate, was flying out the door as I typed.

The fact that it is a root domain and not a subdomain will not be related to it appearing in your search (if I have understood you correctly).

When you say you want to shorten the url are you talking about the subdomain part that you want to shorten : sub.comain.com

or the part after the page name : page.blah?modules=blah&something=else

?

Yes, I want hobby-universe.com to remain a subdomain of lifesupporters.com but I don't want the pages to display the lifesupporters.com address in the url.

Current: hobby-universe.com url re-directs to subdomain hobby-universe.lifesupporters.com

Goal: hobby-universe.com url re-directs to subdomain but retains hobby-universe.com url.

As far as I know, hobby-universe.com is it's own domain which forwards to the hobby-universe.lifesupporters.com subdomain URL.

So what you're suggesting is just use hobby-universe.com, are there benefits to having it as a subdomain or having it seperate?

What I took from Duke's posts is that he sees the hobby site (which is part of the LifeSupporters network) showing up when he searches for LifeSupporters and would like that to continue.

If it was it's own domain, wouldn't you have to search for hobby's in order to get hobby-universe.com? Because I believe his goal is for both sites to continue to appear while searching under LifeSupporters.

ok, you could use URL forwarding or a kind of reverse cloaked forward. Need to know what OS your files are on though as I know of no way of doing this on windows.

Paul, there are a number of reasons why I want to shorten the url but want to remain using the sites as subdomains. Some of the reasons are cosmetic (posting links stretches the forums out of whack), others are functional (nuke_usertemp folder sometimes sending out invalid new user registration links to new members).

Here's all the server information:

CPanel Version: 10.2.0-STABLE

Operating System: Linux

Apache Version: 1.3.33 (Unix)

Perl Version: 5.8.6

PHP Version: 4.3.11

MySQL Version: 4.0.24-standard

You need to use Domain Aliasing

Thanks Tony and welcome to UKWMW.

I appreciate your response but it's a little vague. Any chance you can elaborate a bit?

I can't really go into any more detail without knowing a bot more about the setup (Domain Setup / Registrar, hosting control panel etc) - If the control panel is cPanel then it's easy... After that it could be a lot harder or even impossible to setup without access to DNS on the server.

May not be that easy......

Surely you need to create <VirtualHost> tags in httpd.conf?

Is there an easier way in CPANEL? I know you can do domain forwarding. He is attempting to change the host part to match the root domain though.

So that sub.domain.com appears as domain.com but domain.com already has content, therefore any files with the same name will cause a loop

I am still understanding you correctly aren't I duke?

Apologies for the delay, I forgot about this thread.
