SEO - an industry of its own?

Thes days the search engines play such important role in how much business we are going to get, and because of that I think SEO landed already in English dictionary for good.

Would you call SEO, an industry of its own or would you say that it's still a subcategory of Internet Marketing or Web Design?

I think its still a growing market for the internet.
There are huge numbers of new website owners every week,most will seek some sort of help.
I wonder if SEO will become as over subscribed as hosting has?
I also beleive SEO in a broader feild than it was.
