After burning through way too many providers and testing all three types across different workflows, here's the breakdown I wish someone had given me years ago.
Datacenter proxies — fast, cheap, but detectable
These are server IPs hosted in data centers. Super fast, usually unlimited bandwidth, and very affordable.
Real home IPs from actual devices. Usually rotating, billed per GB.
Real carrier IPs (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) shared by thousands of real users behind CGNAT.
The real lesson I learned? Don't buy the cleanest IP for a job that doesn't need it, and don't cheap out on a job that does.

- Don't use for: Ad account management, campaign testing, anything that involves logging into platforms
- The catch: Meta, Google, TikTok flag them fast. Great for volume, terrible for anything sensitive.
Real home IPs from actual devices. Usually rotating, billed per GB.
- Use for: Large-scale scraping, offer monitoring, ad verification across multiple geos, competitor research
- Don't use for: Situations where you need a permanently fixed identity — residential IPs rotate
- The catch: Pool quality varies wildly between providers. A massive pool full of flagged IPs is worse than a smaller pool of clean ones.
Real carrier IPs (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) shared by thousands of real users behind CGNAT.
- Use for: Account management, multi-account operations, account warming, anything that bans aggressively
- The catch: Most expensive option, and IPs change on their own — that's just how mobile networks work
