NEW YORK (AHN) - Western researchers say the Iranian government is tightening its control on the internet, blocking content in the Farsi national language and restricting what citizens can publish on web journals.
At first, the targets were English-language web sites based out of the U.S. and Europe, but slowly they began censoring Iranians posting Web journals and blogs. Internet service providers have been ordered to prevent Iranians from communicating with each other, by blocking posted messages, which contain Farsi keywords.
John Palfrey, a Harvard University researcher says Iran shows a sophistication in filtering, which matches only that of China and few other countries.
Ron Deibert, a University of Toronto professor, says the censorship makes sense, as people are more likely to be interested in, or incited by, content in their own language.
Users of Microsoft's new blog service in China, are scolded when they use words like "democracy," "freedom," and "human rights."
Anti-censorship activists have managed to bypass the system. If the blog is created in English, the filtering does not go into effect, even if that same blog is later switched to Chinese.
