But they need to justify their decision with the facts, features and benefits so they 'feel' like they made a good decision. They are self centered and want to know WIIFM what's in it for me. Then many times the final impetus that gets them to the buy button is the 'feeling of safety' in numbers that testimonials or reviews bring.

But there are a myriad of emotional 'buy' triggers in between. I guarantee if you analyze your site and make improvements based on several of the 12 psychological trigger points below you will see a major increase in CTR and conversions. All 12 tips can benefit the affiliate sales process but here are a couple points the author Dean Rieck makes that I especially like.
12 Tips for ?Psychological Selling?

#6 You can?t force people to do anything. When people buy, it?s not because you wield some magical power over them. You can urge. You can push. You can entice. But ultimately, people do what they want to do. This means your job is to show how what you?re offering meets your prospect?s needs.

#7 People love to buy. Some say people don?t like to be ?sold.? Not true. People love to be sold. They love to discover wonderful new products and experiences. What people don?t love is to be cheated or tricked. Therefore, it can be helpful to change your analogy of the marketing process. Instead of ?selling? to people, try to ?help? them.
I'd like to add a tip that is so basic it is sometimes forgotten.

#13. People buy from people they like and trust! Online it is especially difficult to give prospects that 'feeling' of trust, because you can't talk to them and use body language to establish trust and rapport. I wager to guess that with this economic climate many will be more UNtrusting because they simply CAN'T AFFORD to make a bad decision.

However if you implement some of Dean's other tips above, they all in some way help to boost trust and rapport!

Happy Selling!

Absolutrelt right. it really is about building a relationship with your customers. This really applies to us as affiliate marketers. We really must make sure that the products we promote deliver. Trust takes a lot of work and time to be built but it can be wiped out in a heart beat

Really good point Niche! Affiliates need to work on the relationship and trust issue even more than merchants I think, especially if the merchant is a well known brand.

Building trust is even more important I think in a bad economy.
People are worried about losing money or making a bad decision.
