Making a good AM website?

Hi, I just started learning AM a day ago, and currently I have been reading a 10 day guide based on the sitesell "Site Build it!" I was wondering if there are any good free site making software, or atleast less than $200. Also, I still am a little unclear about the whole concept. Is it simply that you need your own website and put your "referal" links and banners on it?
