Manufactured between the years of 1984 and 1998, Leica M6 was another precision range finder camera made by Leica Camera AG. It was a much improved version of the M series of Leica cameras. This camera had a lot of improvements over its predecessor of M5. One of the marked improvements was the through the lens light metering system that had no moving parts. Instead of the needle that appeared in the view finder of M5 the M6 had an LED display to show what the lighting level was. 
The new camera has been designed with a shutter release button that appeared in the axis of the film advance liver and the shutter speed dial has been located separately unlike with the M5. The plates at the top and bottom of the camera were made out of magnesium alloy instead of the machined brass plates the M5 had. This has made the M6 lighter. It also had a more streamlined appearance than the M5which looked cluttered. Many features that were there in the M5 had been retained in M6 also. The shutter speeds were available up to 1/1000 second and the focal plane cloth shutter that travelled horizontally has come from the M5. Flash synchronize speed also was 1/50 second. The hot shoe that was there in M5 has been retained. Split image focusing mechanism was also supported with super imposed image. 
As it was customary for the M series of Leica cameras to have bayonet mounts which allowed quick changing of lenses M6 also has retained the same. These cameras were often used with 135mm telephoto lenses and 28mm wide angel lenses while the standard lens used on the camera was a 50mm one. In addition to the standard version of M6 there were three more versions. One was produced to commemorate the 40 years of manufacture of the M series of cameras. Another was called the M6 0.85 which came with a view finder that offered 0.85 magnification. The third was the M6 TTL which was the successor to M 6. When you look at Leica history, you will find that they have been manufacturing cameras for hundred years. All these were precision cameras when compared to the time they were being manufactured. Presently, they are collaborating with Panasonic of Japan in many spheres. Panasonic?s Lumix cameras use Leica lenses made by Panasonic according to the quality standards set by Leica. Engineering teams of both companies have got together and made a few innovative features added into their cameras.
