An external link is a hyperlink that points to another website on the internet, typically on another domain from the current website. External links on your site become backlinks for the sites you link to. And many sites are more likely to link to you if you link to them first.
Internal linking pass link juice one website to another one as well as page views which increase your web visibility across the web.
 
As far as I know internal links it also contributes a pretty big part to seo, and external links will have backlinks for you.
 
When you link your pages within your own directory tree limit is called Internal Link. While a user browsing your website , the browser is already in your directory, then you can points links from the current directory and don ' t need to specify a full URL path.

External links which link your pages to other web sites.
