Importance of 404 page

  1. Redirect 404's to your:
document root (home or domain index page)
redirect to a search of your website
redirect to a custom google search and get some ad revenue if you have sufficient traffic
  2. Pop-up an ad offer you are either affiliated with or can sell this 404 traffic to
  3. Your server log will show the 404 and the URL that was requested if there is an error to correct
--learn to read your server log and how to sort the 200,404,403 (other codes)
404 errors are a selling opportunity if you use them correctly
404 errors can also be a customer relations opportunity
Or both of the above^

Thank you @marthakahnwald :D
I've never knew that Microsoft's IIS 7.0, IIS 7.5, and IIS 8.0 servers define that bunch of HTTP substatus codes to indicate a more specific cause of that '''404 error''' ...
I really thought there was only one soft ver. of it (error 404) which means > The server is not found.

Hi

404 errors can be frustrating for users, so the main purpose of a 404 page is to turn the potential negative user experience of encountering an error into a positive one. The key to this is links. Links on 404 pages are so important because they give users a way out of the error page.

But it doesn't always work out.

The 404 page's purpose is to keep visitors on your site even if they land on a page that doesn't exist.

When done well, a 404 page can not only keep a visitor, but also encourage her to stick around and see what else is going on at your dot com. Keep the following in mind when creating your 404 page:
  • Should be free of advertising
  • Should let the user know she's reached the page in error but how you let her know can reflect the personality of the site
  • Should funnel the visitor to other pages or the home page
  • Should be static HTML and not contain complex scripts that might create additional errors for some users
  • Should load as quickly as possible

Hey guys,

Creating a custom 404 page on your website and reduce your website's bounce rate.
Many marketers ignore the significance of 404 page.
It's important to have it when you want to point out some invalid page or page that has been removed elsewhere. For better user experience, on the 404 page it should be highlighted where users can find the desired info, should they go to another URL, page on the site, and so on.

Using 404 Pages for Good. 404 errors can be frustrating for users, so the main purpose of a 404 page is to turn the potential negative user experience of encountering an error into a positive one. The key to this is links. Links on 404 pages are so important because they give users a way out of the error page.

You may have mistakenly typed in the wrong URL or clicked on a broken link. Whatever the reason, it’s important to get to where you need to go.
The best way to execute this is by reaching a nifty, custom 404 page to redirect you.
404 pages can be a serious tool for misguided visitors. It can also be a sign of lack of UX and attention to detail if not customized and implemented properly.

A website that has an error 404 page instead of a home page is basically the least visited site on the web. It means people are not likely to visit your site once they click on any link and it doesn't take them anywhere. As soon as people realize that you have no content or service, they will leave your site immediately. This also means that you are losing money each day because advertisers are paying for the impressions that are wasted by visitors leaving your site.

The Google bots visiting your site won't stick around longer if they can't find anything to crawl, which will lower the rank of your page. Consequently, no one will ever know about the web pages you have created, which will affect your overall web traffic. It is also possible to get a penalty for not having any content on your site, so it's important to create an error 404 page.

It is a better solution to create an error 404 page instead of a temporary out-of-service page or leaving your website empty because search engines can index the content of your error 404 page. So, when somebody searches using certain keywords relating to the content on your site, they will be able to find you with the help of search results and they can click on your own website to come back.

The following are some tips which you can use for creating an error 404 page:

• First and the foremost thing you need to remember is that it should be linked with the main site. If you don't link it to your main site, then there is a chance that people will never know about the content which you have created and they won't be able to find their way back.

• Ensure that your 404 page looks like your website's theme and color scheme because if it doesn't match, then no one will be able to figure out that its the error 404 page.

• Include your contact details such as phone number or email ID so that people can easily get in touch with you and ask for help if they want to find their way back on your site.

404s are good ad opportunities and to recover traffic but you def want to scan your site to find out how those 404s were generated.
