For some years ago I got a forum for dating webmasters running VB and got tons of spam... it really sucked.
For some weeks I started some free forums running phpBB, no spam and its free.
Why not use free forum scripts ? No need for paid one...
no is nothing wrong with you, everyone has it's own prefferences and phpBB is good. As oshq said you have to secure it a bit and add some plugins and capcha.
phpBB is definitely one of the leading forum software packages out there. It has an impressive security track record based on what I've heard. phpBB claim this on their website too.
For some time I was thinking it was becoming a dinosaur, but with the recent version 3.1 release, it's kicked things into the 21st century with a responsive theme as default, for instance.
With that said, my favorite option is MyBB. Like phpBB, it's free and open source.
No there's nothing wrong with you. It's all based around personal preference and if it's what you like, then who's to judge? phpBB isn't that bad at all to be honest, just a bit complicated installing mods and such if you aren't skilled at it yet.
