How do you determine vendor conversion rates?

If I want to promote a product through an affiliate network, are the conversion rates from the vendor site to sales usually readily available somehow? Going from the "Affiliate Marketing for Newbies" thread in this forum, this can have a major impact on net revenue for an affiliate.

Are conversion rates usually published or do you have to email the owner and ask them?

Sometimes they are published. In most networks it shows you some type of metric, not necessarily the actual sales conversion rate but sometimes something like avg earnings per click. So you can compare merchants that way too to find out which merchants affiliates are actually earning the most with.

even if the conversion rate is published by the seller, it isn`t an exact %.
the % depends on the quality of the traffic, and the quality of the products and the sales page.
