Finding blogs to comment on

So, I am reading about ways to increase traffic and pagerank and it looks like blog commenting is one of the best things to do.

I set up some Google alerts for the keywords I am following and that has given me lots of blogs to comment on. However, NONE of them are dofollow.

How do you guys go about finding blogs to comment on?

Also, when you comment, do you tend to add a link within your comment or do you just add your website. i.e. do you say something like, "I like what you wrote about ..... there is more information on this topic at..."

Thanks!
Marie

You need to be discreet. Don't try to hijack that blog's traffic. Most blog comment systems will ask you to enter your URL. If they are do-follow, that's a link. If not, it may get you some traffic if your comment adds something interesting or helpful to the discussion.

This of it like posting on a forum like this one: If you post a blatant self-advertisement or try to poach 5readers from this forum to another one, chances are your post will be removed and other punitive measures taken against you. If you post something useful, you are enhancing your reputation/brand and acquiring another backlink via your signature. You give and you get back. Those who just try to take get penalized.

The simplest and cheapest way is to google search the blogs leave the comments praising the blogger and leaving a good comment and then slip in your site link their..... too easy...

That will get your comment edited or you banned on any of my blogs. Good comment or not, posting just for the sake of "slipping in your site link" is just disrespectful.

Do not just copy and paste a bunch of compliments either. Blog owners get so many of those that we know they are just an attempt to get links. We just delete all generic comments automatically.

You need to make a relevant comment that relates to the blog post. I know that Dr. Marie is the type to do that and she wants to comment also to build her reputation online, so she will do it right.

Just making the comment for others who may read this.

OK, so which of these approaches do you think is better?

1.Hi John! Thanks for posting this great information on canine diabetes! I totally agree that most dogs with diabetes can live normal lives. I really love how you described how easy it is to give your dog insulin injections.

(and don't add a link, but hope people click on my name to come to my site)

Thanks!

The safest, as far as getting your posts approved is number 3.

However for name of blog you would put: Dr. Marie - Ask A Vet Question so when people read, they see you are a Dr and see the name of your blog too. Plus that will get good anchor text in there for you.

If you find some good traffic, do follow blogs you become a regular commenter on you could try #1 above and see if they would allow. I'd try it after making a couple posts like I recommend in the paragraph above 1st. After they sort of get to know you they may let the extra link stand.

Ouch

Sorry but looking for do follow blogs to comment on may not be the best way to get good backlinks for your site.

It's a method and I have posted about it in my blog but there are better ways

Like building your own network, or article marketing, or linkbait or forum articipation or many other methods other people here have talked about in various threads

Well, I wouldn't recommend blog comments as the only link-building strategy for anyone but it is one way and it has the added benefit of helping to build reputation and branding, if you do it right, which some other link-building strategies lack.

Try to view the source of the page and get to know if the links of other commenters were nofollowed before you comment and also, posting something like "I like what you wrote about ..... there is more information on this topic at..." will get most of your comments unapproved and/or deleted.
Try to post something useful not adverts.
