Hey everyone,

As you now, Facebook has been quiet about its journey into voice technology. But now they are starting to open up. Facebook’s Head of Design Luke Woods was presenting onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt and gave some important hints for marketers.

We’ve had voice-based software around for several years. We already have Apple’s Siri, Google Now, Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana. Where is Facebook? The big players, except Facebook, have solutions for voice search on websites, texting messages, creating reminders, dial phone numbers etc. Marketers have also started to look into the opportunities in this field. However, there are only few people who regularly use voice commands and voice search on their devices. Voice has not had its breakthrough yet. The technology has not been good enough yet.

Facebook is likely to change the name of the game. As the social media giant introduces its voice search and command for its app, it will have significant impact on the market. News are spreading that we’ll soon see important improvements to the voice technology, leading to far more people using voice going forward. Can you imagine accessing just about anything on your mobile, glasses or watch just by speaking to them?

What is Facebook doing exactly? Experts are foreseeing that Facebook’s new Messenger assistant, M, will be a vital player in the advancement of social media voice search and command. Messenger is already a giant player, with over 1.2 billion active users today. It is said that M will include next generation of conversational AI (artificial intelligence) chatbots. Broader speaking, it is forecasted that Facebook will lift voice search accuracy in general for its platform.

Why does this matter to you?
It is vital for Marketers and Business Leaders to stay updated on the new developments in this area, as they will profoundly affect the marketing industry in the near future. Companies who act quickly will get a head start and have a good chance of beating the competition.

Primarily, the advancement of voice-based software for internet marketing and social media is likely to result in that paid search will boom. With paid search in Google’s Adwords you can create a Broad Match Modifier, a popular match type used by advertisers who wish to gather relevant traffic from their campaigns. Successful marketers will invest time and resources in creating the optimal broad match modifiers tailored for their products and services. By analyzing keyword matches, marketers and business leaders can stay ahead of the game as the new social media voice opportunities are launched.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another area that most likely with rise in popularity as voice-based technology for social media is improving. Facebook is welcoming third-party AI technology into its platform and AI can certainly support voice-based advertisement and marketing activities. AI chatbots are already present on Messenger and with voice-based search and commands this presence will only increase. Already today Messenger allows chatbots to have natural conversations, potentially leading to sales. Voice technology can make these conversations even more natural, leading to stronger relationships with the users and clients. For example, a popular travel site recently launched an app using AI chatbots. A client asking about a flight, e.g. “What morning flights are there between Los Angeles and New York?” will immediately receive an answer from the chatbot.

The voice search and command functionality in Facebook is predicted to be a major breakthrough and game changer in the market. Consequently it is vital that marketers and business leaders include voice-activated chatbots on Facebook into their marketing plan going forward. Early movers in this new potential market will be the winners.

How do you see voice technology shape marketing moving forward?
