do you see a surge in price paid per click in the period just before christmas? I do.

yes, seen that to. Ads that I was getting paid 30 cents for a fortnight ago are getting me over $2 per click in the last day or so

Doesn't surprise me since it was the holidays and they knew that ppl would be advertising like crazy. Reminds me of gas stations raising the price of gas before the 4th of July.
