Whatever you do - don't listen to affiliate marketing trainers who tell you they've worked out how to game Google with SEO. The SEO space is constantly changing and what is correct one month, is out of date the next these days.
When you are starting out, you should always buy less and use more open source options. You have to get used to doing business online first, instead of getting sucked in by all the promises of sites that want to charge you for what is free elsewhere.
A lot of the spammy affiliate sites that were supporting the affiliate networks have lost most of their traffic due to recent algorithm changes by Google.
It's difficult to get in touch personally because affiliates often sign up to loads of sites, get the links, post them on their site and rarely come back. Most only come back if they get an automated e-mail saying they made a sale.
