I don't think your over doing it, just take your time. Lots of links very quickly will flag your site. I like to think of it as drizzling links rather then poring , one thing I would say is think about your link profile and mix it up a bit with nofollow links.
You need incoming links for the search engines to follow as well as good content.

The only way to learn is to read, try it out, read some more and find what works I have learnt a lot since joining I now can laugh at myself for knowing so little when I first started. Its a learning curve but once you learn it there is so much opportunity to make a good living
