Joomla 2.5 manual installation

I have installed joomla 2.5 manually, including creating the database , filling out the text boxes on the installer like database name and username etc.
I then deleted the installation file and uploaded the configuration.php file as required, I can then then log into my joomla account which is fine,

However I cannot save any changes made to the main template index file, ' Could not save data. Error: An error occurred. The file index.php could not be saved.'

or if I try to modify anything in global configuration I get the following Could not save data. Error: 'Could not write to the configuration file'

Can Someone please advise

After using wordpress for a long time, I finally made a switch to Joomla. In my cpanel I have softacolous which provides one click installation. I have installed Joomla, but I have not stared customizing it.

Joomla is old school CMS right now.

I think they should think intensively about this task of adding more functionality to Joomla in next upcoming months.
