Be active in this community, ask loads of questions, take action, and be committed. That's how it gets done!

Use this forum as a mentor. It's full of members at every level of experience which makes for many balanced perspectives for a Newbie to learn from. Take the time to read through the forums here and see for yourself that the Newbies achieving success have actually dedicated themselves to success in this industry and reaping the rewards by following the advice of fellow AffiliateFix members, being dedicated to success, putting the time in, and making the necessary investments. You cannot shortcut the learning curve. It goes slower for some and it goes faster for others. Everyone has their own intellectual absorption rates, skill development pace, commitment level, and budgets.

You are a FIX'er now and that means you have the world at your feet with IM. Here are a few suggestions:

Read and learn through extensive reading in this community. Select one vertical. one tracker, and one traffic source. Learn from your fellow members here to master each one of them (a couple of months). Then you can expand and replicate your successes.

As a Newbie, you need to read, study, invest, and implement. Perseverance, dedication, and taking action are the cornerstones of the success you will obtain.

Read
Read through the various areas of the forum to learn about the types of marketing available for your new business. Make a list of all the types of marketing and take some notes along the way. Then determine which area of marketing with which you will start your journey.

Do this to select an area of marketing to start, as well, do this to select a tracker, a traffic source, and to select a vertical.

Then read up on the affiliate networks and select two to begin with that will serve your needs and the types of offers you would like to promote. Put your application in and they will call you for an interview. Be professional and be prepared to answer some questions about how you will promote offers, do you have a website, are you a Newbie, etc. Please note, if you join the Dojo, we have a thread there that can offer assistance in getting accepted to some of the networks.

Study
Now that you have selected a basis to begin, read all of the threads in this forum that relate to your initial selections so that you have a rudimentary understanding of their features and benefits.

Invest
You will require some investment. A VPS server, domains, traffic, landing pages, etc. You will need a budget for daily, weekly, and monthly expenses. This will change over time and you will need to update it often so that you know exactly what your costs and earnings are.

Implement
This is where it all starts to earn. You must now begin to implement what you have established as your foundation for your business.

Here is some advice and guidance that will help you establish your initial goals:

Make sure you complete the following first.

Every business needs:

1. a plan
2. a schedule for research, learning, and execution
3. a budget.

Remember to read through our WIKI and get to know the basics as well as some of the buzz words in the industry.

I also recommend reading the following thread:

As a Newbie, What Stops You From Getting Started

Here is a set of immediate goals:

1. Get a VPS
2. Select a vertical
3. Select a tracker
4. Select a couple of networks and get your approval
5. Select a traffic source
6. Create a schedule for researching, learning (training), and working. This is a business, treat it as such!
7. Create a budget for every expense (daily, weekly, monthly)
8. Be very active in this forum by researching, asking questions, helping others when you are able.

Check out the new enhanced membership option here as it is full of great tools and features.

Remember This! : Nothing has to be perfect before you start. Read & study, but invest and implement at the same time. You cannot learn all of it from reading and studying. A great deal of your learning comes from implementing!

Good Luck!

Hi!

There's only one real way to figure out how to do this crazy business we call affiliate marketing.

First: read as much as possible on this forum. Most importantly, you should read guides and follow-alongs containing the experience of other people who have done it before. The experience of actually canvassing through these testimonials is invaluable. Why? Because it'll give you clues, tips and especially tell you about mistakes you can avoid.

Second: read about banner optimization, ad networks, DSP, SSP, price models, dynamic tracking, ad spots, prelanders, landers, ad exchanges, eCPM, EPC, RPM, ROI, payout, etc. You must acquaint yourself with the business jargon. If you don't, you'll be lost and won't be able to do a thing in this business.

Third: join an affiliate network. That's where you'll find expert professionals who are ready to help you on your promising ride to the top.

Fourth: ALWAYS listen to your affiliate manager/account manager. These people are super intelligent online analysts who will recommend great offers and guide you into the right direction, especially at the beginning when it's going to be hyper crucial for you to have that help/support.

Fifth: get addicted! Affiliate marketing is about analyzing numbers, reaching fast conclusions, analyzing some more, optimizing campaigns until they become profitable and then repeating this process all over again. This means that you need to developed a great passion for this amazing game, otherwise you'll give up easily without getting a dime for your wasted efforts.

Hope this helped!

Join a network, study hard and I guarantee you'll succeed!

Cheers!

It's also important to consider what draws you to internet marketing.

Do you want to work from home and make millions? Might want to read something other than success stories. There's a lot of hard work and significant investment that you will probably waste for a while as you learn. You can definitely make it, but be sure you're willing to run the marathon before you start practicing sprints.

On the other hand...

Do you have an existing passion for some aspect of marketing and want to turn it into a career path?

If so, double down on that. Find what you love and take responsibility for your own growth. Be a small player in a big game, but own your part of the board.

I came to digital marketing as a writer looking to turn a hobby (and even a wee bit of talent, according to my mother) into a profitable skill. I started with SEO copywriting and eventually broadened my perspective to cover search analytics, conversion psychology and native advertising. These were all obvious choices because I started with a bit of passion and was willing to put some work in...

...but honestly, not a lot of work.

Not as much as those pajama-wearing lucky ass millionaires.

I read their stories and fumed at their luck. Why wasn't I first? How could they succeed so easily? What do I need to do?

But one pattern has become clear: few of these millionaires got there because of a talent (sure, many have it also, and it does help, but it's not a prerequisite). They got there due to hard work and dedication. After a while, I stopped getting jealous.

In the end, I do not (and will not) make millions working from home. Not even close. However, I'm sitting in an awesome office with colleagues I enjoy working with and feel successful every day, even when I'm busy screwing something up (get used to that feeling). That, to me, is success in digital marketing.

So my guide to getting started in internet marketing will read very differently from the rest. As it should. You'll find this pattern: every successful at-home internet millionaire tells their story somewhere. They show you why their formula worked, and the key ingredient is who they are.

As such, I'd suggest as a practical first step: go find someone whose story speaks to you. Find some footsteps you can follow. When it comes to internet marketing, there's no shortage. Hell, even a company can have a message or identity that you love. Follow it, break it apart, figure out what makes it tick... then forge your own path based on what you've learned.

And as everyone else has said: prepare to fail. Have fun while you do, if you can. Prepare for that part of your brain that says "screw it, give up" and "no, not today" and "this is too much to learn at once" (hint: it is, so break it down into bits you can digest). Decide what that means to you and then forget it right away because it doesn't matter - what matters is that you'll face it, and the better you feel about the decisions you've made (even the worst ones can be valuable when you made them with intent and they came from you), the easier you'll find it to get a foothold in digital marketing.
