Google's Issues With Most Web Directories: Little Content

A Google Webmaster Help thread has a webmaster who launched a business web directory in the Netherlands complaining his ranking is really poor.

As you know, less than a year ago, Google began removing directories from the index. But why? Why does Google dislike web directories?

The main reason is they lack unique and valuable content - for the most part.

Is this a worry? When I first started I was taught to submit my sites to free, new directories. They were ugly as can be. Personally I've never used them. The last time I actually used a directory was back in the 90s via yahoo. Perhaps there's still a use for online directories and things that mimick the yellow pages but as of now I'm not seeing the value.

Yeah, I stopped using directories for submitting backlinks. It's incredibly boring work and I'm glad their getting deindexed.
