I have a business that I am going to launch for affiliates and vendors (not gonna mention it here) and I was wondering what are some tips for search optimization for my site. Regards

This is one of the best onpage optimization tutorials I've seen,
seomoz.org/blog/perfecting-keyword-targeting-on-page-optimization

For offpage you can submit your website in online directories, article directories, forums, blogs and social websites.

This is not difficult at all. Just focus on the off page and on page. This is a key-figure that will decide your traffic. On page is about content...Off page is about building backlinks.

Hello! I hope my post will helpyou somehow, so here we go!
As far as you know already, SEO - is a time consuming and highly specialised taks, which will take up to 3 month before you may notice the results. As it was mentioned you have to focus on on-page & off-page SEO. But I'd recommend you first work with on-page SEO which includes:
- fine tuning the contents in the website, because it will make the title rank high in the search engines
- keywords analysis
- opt-n website content (!!!!!!!!!!!!) HTML coding, building keywords rich content, creation of optimized title and META tags
- implementing various separate search engine submission methodoligies to promote the website.
After on-page optimization will be done you may start off-page, which contain such technics as follow:
- directory submission
- article writing/submission
- socialbookmarking
- press releases submission
- forum/blog posting/submission
- blog creation & commenting
- Yahoo answers
- Link exchange with related websites
- affiliate marketing
- email marketing

So, that's it! Wish you best of luck!

Keep building content and backlinks. With more content people will reach your site with long tailed keywords even if you’re not ranked high in Google and of course backlinks; Quality backlinks are the King of offline optimization. Especially if you are trying to rank in a very competitive market.

Write good content with keywords, meta tags, don't forget to put your main keyword in your titles, build backlinks with your keywords as the anchor text!

Sushie,
I am part of a group that is in the final stages of a whole new approach to affiliate marketing and getting sites ranked. No one is doing anything like this and we are beside ourselves because it's ready to be beta tested. We are looking for 250 people to help us beta test and you can either be a part of that and learn about getting your web sites ranked or join... it's free and I'm being honest about that. Eventually we will be charging for the program but right now we need people to run it through the mill and look for possible bugs. I'm not here to pitch anything, but our company is called seo co-op if you want to check it out. And truly, there is no charge to you during this beta test time and you will learn a whole lot about getting your keywords ranked. You use it to learn and allow us to use you to find bugs in the programs...

First of all you have to make sure that you are fine with the onsite SEO, such as with your meta tags info and keywords as well as with the your content. Then you hve to follow other methods to get more backlinks to your site. Such as article submission, blog comments, blog creation, forums postings, social bookmarking and etc.

Onpage -

Keywords in the following places:

H1, H2, H3

First sentence

Keyword in bold at least once

Keyword in italics at least once

Keyword underlined at least once in the article

Keyword mentioned in the last sentence.

===================

Offpage -

Make sure any links to your site have the keyword(s) you want to rank for as anchor text.

For exsample if you want to rank for "search engine" make sure the links are like this:

Search engine

That is some great general advice, the diagram with the page layout is a perfect example of how to optimize a page with text and alt tags. Everybody should take a similar approach when editing their pages.
