In reality, none of the free methods are free. Every traffic method requires time and investment of some type. One has to weigh the cost of time over money. Paid traffic is the best.
Free traffic methods typically are incredibly competitive for two reasons.
One, every Newbie on the planet wants to master free traffic because most of them are not organized and funded properly for their new businesses. So they slam the "free" traffic methods and platforms trying to gain the attention of the SERPS and the Social Platforms. They water down the traffic pool with inefficient attempts to garner traffic.
Two, the folks that are succeeding with "free" traffic are using "free" traffic as a secondary and/or tertiary source of traffic that ties directly, and often rests on the shoulders of, their paid traffic.
"Free" social traffic for example, usually works best when coupled with paid social traffic. (IMO)
