Yes, XML probably is the best option.

If you use script that does not have built-in sitemap generator I use this tool: Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps

You can either use a XML sitemap or a text file. A text file is the easiest i prefer.

I'm using a piece of software (Actinic), and the forums are positively discouraging people from using sitemaps (go to Actinic Community - Support for Actinic Users, search for google sitemaps, and read). So I'm hanging fire for a bit.
