Would a first-name COM help an affiliate brand?

Evan.com was reportedly sold for $400,000 on July 22.

It is not an affiliate keyword, but it could work for a creator, founder, newsletter, agency, or personal media brand.

Would you rather build on a clean first-name .com, or a more obvious niche keyword domain?

A clean first name domain is usually the better call if you are building a personal brand, agency, or founder led project where flexibility matters. Keyword domains can still give a quick CTR boost in hyper focused niches, but they limit you the second you want to pivot. These days people instantly spot thin affiliate sites, so a short name just looks way more trustworthy to real visitors. I would pick the first name domain every time, simply because you can build a real brand around it that lasts.

For affiliate, it works when there is a real voice behind it, a founder, reviewer, newsletter, or community.

Without that, it can actually be less clear than a niche name. The domain helps, but the brand still has to feel human.
